The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to different areas close by or to other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If this hobby interest you read along as this article discusses the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to know as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. With adequate knowledge you are less likely to be fooled.

Number one to look at Is gemstone color. Highly prized gemstones have colors that are close to the purest spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Muted gemstone colors or too dark can lower the value quite easily.

Gemstone cut is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with the poor cut will not reflect the light consistently. Color saturation, hue and tone will always appear inconsistent

Our next consideration is the aspect of clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye while others need a 10X magnification.

Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types in gemstones you can collect. You could try collecting Malachite, Topaz or Natural moissanite for instance. The varieties are nearly endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. For example in Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite.

Sapphires do twinkle. This is caused by the smaller, microscopic stones inside
the primary gem that were created at the same time. This twinkling phenomenon is
known as "silk" referring to its silky and silvery qualities. It appears as a
star that seems to be imposed over a silk like background.
