Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to learn everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.
The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher they closer they are to natural spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They are valued much less when they are lighter or darker than the pure natural color.
The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits in determining gemstone value. The cut has to be done with precision to reflect the light properly. A stone that has a poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. Color tone, saturation, and hue will always appear inconsistent
Our next consideration is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.
Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to the difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.
Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones.
