Collecting Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish each and every one of the 150 varieties available. This article will examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The very first step in becoming a gemstone collector the proper way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By visiting a local library you can find books on the subject that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Top grade gemstones have colors that are close in pureness to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are muted or are too dark can lower the value.

How a stone is cut is the second most important factor to look at before a purchase is made. The precision of the cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. The cut will factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

The next factor to look at is the clarity. This refers to the purity of the gemstone or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Next on the agenda is the duo of size and weight. Due to the fact gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can find your raw materials through field trips In the United States in Florida you can find Chalcedony and Conch Pearl. And in Canada you can find nephrite jade in Dease Lake, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec and even black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.

Tips On tanzanite loose gemstones

An opal is actually what is known as a mineraloid, a shapeless gel with silicium
dioxide that was deposited at a low temperature in crevices and fissures of all
different types of rock. The most common types of rock where they were deposited
are limonite, sandstone, rhyolite and basalt. It can also form original fossils
or replace fossils that have already been formed, and collectors find this
phenomenon very interesting. Opals are relatively young gems, and they are so
fragile they could never have survived early geological upheavals that produced
other types of stones. Opals did occur in volcanic masses of calcite that filled
the veins in lava rock. Hot, briny gel like mixtures would rise up to the
surface from the volcano which decomposed the calcite. What was left behind was
colloidal silica, and this along with water later produced opals.
