How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. This article will discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. You will know exactly what to look for.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They drop in value the farther they are from the pure natural color.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and is used not only to appraise diamonds along with gemstones. A precision cut gemstone showcases the natural color of the gemstone, diminish any inclusions, and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way of determining the excellence of the cut of the stone is to consider how consistently it reflects the light over the stones complete surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting inside the stone. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Next up is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Cry Lake, British Columbia or sodalite and rose quartz near Bancroft, Ontario as well as iolite from Manitouwadge, Ontario. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.

De Beers reigned as the supreme supplier of diamonds until other countries began
successful operations. One country is Australia. Diamond entrepreneurs and
geologists began searching for kimberlite pipes in the Kimberly region of
Western Australia in 1969. The search went on for 10 years and on October 2,
1979 the Argyle pipe was discovered. Once it was decided that the enterprise
would be economical they started to mine the area in 1983, and the Argyle
Diamond Mine was given its commission in December 1985.

Collecting Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we discuss a number of things you need to know when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

At the very beginning you need to read up on each of the gemstones out there. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. A knowledgeable buyer is a wise one.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are muted or too dark lowers the value per carat.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A precision cut gemstone showcases the pure color of the stone, diminishes its inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision regarding the cut of the gemstone is how consistent and well, it reflects the light over its entire surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting internally. Gem color appears washed out.

The next factor to consider is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This means the stones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystal structure type Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. You can collect gemstones like Emerald, Spinel or Iolite and then try others. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Just in the United States in Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone.
