Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. Many people have a great love of the various gemstones found around the world today. This article will discuss a number of things you need to know when starting this interesting gemstone hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to understand as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You need to be as informed as possible.

Color is a very important part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Traditional spectral colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that tend to be darker or paler tend to be less valued.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors into appraisal of diamonds but gemstones as well. An excellent cut will highlight the pure color of the stone, diminishes its inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One excellent way to determine the excellence in gemstone cut is to consider how well and consistent it reflects light over its entire surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

The next factor to look at is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This is talking about the gemstones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different in prices as well. This factor comes from the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in gemstones you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Chrysoprase, Tanzanite and other varieties of zoisite or Axinite and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Just in the United States in Pennsylvania you can find Amethyst, Almandite Garnet and Pyrope Garnet, Beryl, Sunstone and Moonstone.
