By Lee MacRae
Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well to begin with they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many people love to find, collect and finish each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.
The very first step in beginning this hobby the proper way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will prevent you from making mistakes at the start.
Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible to the purest spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or on the dark side are diminished in value.
The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits when buying a gemstone. The stone has to be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A stone that has a poor cut will be muted or washed out. Color saturation, hue and tone will never be consistent.
Another factor to look at is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This means the stones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.
You will note that gemstones are categorized according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This factor comes from the difference in relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.
Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Look at each stone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. And in Canada you can hunt for rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec along with the unique deep blue beryl in Canada's Yukon Territory. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.

Proportion refers to the angles and relative measurements of a polished diamond.
More than any other feature, proportions determine a diamond's optical
properties. Studies have shown that table size, crown angle, and pavilion depth
have a dramatic effect on a diamond's appearance. Symmetry is a grading term for
the exactness of shape and placement of facets. Variations in symmetry include
off-center culets and tables, poor facet alignment, misshapen facets, out-of-
round girdles, and wavy girdles.
