Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the various gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Follow along as we discuss a number of things you need to know when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

To start off right you need to read up on the various gemstones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from making mistakes. This will help you make informed decisions.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close to the purest spectral colors of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Muted gemstone colors or on the dark side lowers the value per carat.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones as well. An excellent cut will highlight the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision in gemstone cut is to consider how consistently it reflects the light throughout its surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting internally. Gemstone color will be washed out.

The next factor to look at is the clarity of the stone. This refers to the gemstones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Agate, Tanzanite and other varieties of zoisite or Onyx for instance. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite.

E.W. Streeter, in his book Precious Stones and Gems (1892), describes a number
of fine sapphires. One of these was in the collection of the Muse au Jardin des
Plantes, in Paris, and weighed 133.06 carats. The same stone was also described
by Sourindro Mohun Tagore in his classic, Mani-Ml (1879, 1881), referring to
it as the Wooden Spoon-Sellers Sapphire, in reference to the poor man who is
said to have found it in Bengal, India. Streeter said it was without flaw. This
is undoubtedly the same stone that resides today in Paris's Museum of Natural
History, for it is of a distinctive lozenge shape and possesses only six facets,
appearing like a huge sapphire rhomb. It is indeed nearly "without flaw,"
containing only one small feather and crystal inclusion, and is possibly of
Burmese or Sri Lankan origin. According to the museum's H.J. Schubnel, the
sapphire actually weighs 135.80 carats. In the museum it is known as the Ruspoli
Sapphire. During the 17th century, a Roman prince named Ruspoli sold this
sapphire to a salesman, who in turn, sold it to King Louis XIV sometime before
1691. At that time it was the third most prominent gem in the French Crown
Jewels.
