Many people today say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the various gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Read long as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting to collect varieties of gemstones yourself.
The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to know everything there is to know about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you learn about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.
First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable the more they move away from the spectral color.
How the gemstone is cut is the second most important value determination to look at before buying. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.
Next to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of the gemstone. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.
The next factors to consider our size and weight. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are priced by the carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams Be aware however, that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.
Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Kunzite, Topaz or Cassiterite for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Just in the United States in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral.

There are many other common types of treatment to enhance the beauty of colored gemstones. Emeralds are often oiled and waxed to protect them and to hide fine lines that naturally occur in the stone. Some sapphires have their blue color enhanced using diffusion, a chemical process. Certain stones are treated with radiation, again mimicking the processes of nature. All these practices are standard in the jewelry industry; in fact, enhancement is so common that good quality unenhanced stones often come with a certificate stating that fact.
