So You Want To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to travel to various locations nearby or even different countries to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you follow along as we show you the various factors in gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you learn about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable the more they deviate from the spectral color.

Gemstone cut is the second most important factor to consider. The preciseness of the cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. It will fully ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much someone will pay for it.

The next factor to consider is the clarity of the gemstone. This means the purity of the stone or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can give you an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people loved to spend weekends to go looking for gemstones. For example in Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or check out the quartz regions in Mt Hope or Inverell, New South Wales.
